The Schooner Homebrew Championship 2008 wrapped up with an impressive showing from the brewers of G.B.S.  The winners of the medals include Dave Blue (1st Place Maibock), Steve Dahl (2nd Place American Wheat, 3rd Place Blonde Ale), Jerid Saffell (3rd Place Doppelbock, 3rd Place Old Ale), Bryan Clauser (1st Place Weizenbock, 2nd Place North German Altbier), Tim Hayes (1st Place Dusseldorf Altbier), and Scott Hespen (1st Place Russian Imperial Stout).  Points were given to the club based off of the place of the medals won by each brewer.  In the end the Garage Brewers Society took 4th place.  The Schooner Homebrew Championship featured over 500 entries this year and is one of the largest competitions based in the midwest.

GBS member Bryan Clauser kept up with his winning ways this month as he won the GBS Club Competition for the AHA Club Only competition.  Bryan beat out a tremendous field of many competitors.  But when it came down to it, he managed to squeak by second place entry submitted by Shawn Sweeney and GBS will be submitting his entry into next months AHA Club Comp.  Jeff Britton rounded out the top 3 with a sparkling cherry mead.  Due to lack of space, I will not be listing the rest of the field.  First, Second, and Third is all we have to worry about for now.  Bryan submitted a still, sweet mead to bring hom the gold while Shawn submitted his sparkling, sweet mead.  Congrats to everyone.

The next AHA Club Compitition is being held in October.  All entries are due by October 11 and judging will be held on October 18th.  It is an "Imperial Anything" competition so any GBS members that want to participate in this one will need to brew it up soon.  Remember, the tag line for this comp is "It's not about the biggest beer, it is about the bigger beer done best".  Keep that in mind when formulating your recipe.  Bring you submission to the September 16th meeting and the club will vote on them then.  Good luck to everyone.  Let's represent GBS and put our name on the map!

The first Saturday in May is National Big Brew Day.  Brewers across the country gather with each other and brew up like recipes.  This years national recipes are in honor of the late, great Michael Jackson.  We at GBS are mixing it up a bit this year.  While we are all participating in Big Brew Day, we will not be doing the 'official' recipes.  Several members of the Garage Brewers are doing up a Belgian Strong Dark.  The good folks at O'Fallon Brewery are allowing us to age it in one of the barrels.  The same barrels they use to make their O'Fallon Whiskey Smoked Porter.  For those interested in attending, GBS members, as well as non-members, will be meeting at O'Fallon Brewery at 10am.  There will be approximately 10 different brewers up there all brewing with their own systems.  Anyone that has ever been interested in seeing how easy homebrewing is, is encouraged to join us up there.  Walk around, see the different set ups.  Talk to the brewers.  And best of all, sample many different kinds of homemade beer.  There will be plenty of food there for everyone.  Best part of it all is that it is all free!  There will be a toast at noon to commemorate the occasion.
